Coconut Grater
For posterity, just in case cocunut graters at sundry shops go the way of the dodo.
How to use:
1. The objective is to crack open to halve the coconut with a parang/machete (big knife!).
2. Do it over the drain, in case of leftover coconut water in the old coconut, see the brown things sticking out from under the second picture.
3. When coconuts dry up, the water mostly thickens into the white milky flesh.
4. Then press each half against the rotating grater till all the flesh is removed.
5. This grated stuff is caught in a basin below.
This grated flesh is then 'milked' for coconut milk. This is the fresh stuff aka santan. Not the powdered instant stuff you find in supermarkets. Anyway, this is how my mum used to get santan once upon a time. Not this particular shop obviously. Now, most people get santan from the supermarket, including me. So we can get the healthier and more convenient low-fat stuff.
